Kevin’s Belief in a Better Future
“I got laid off during the pandemic, and then I got complacent. My mother told me about Cara, but I was putting it off and putting it off. I finally called once my unemployment ran out, and I started with Cara in March 2022.
“Before I got a job, Cara helped me get food and bus cards so that I could get by. They took care of everything and taught me a lot in their classes. I worked with Barb, one of their volunteers, on my resume. She helped me make it look professional and add some spice to it.
“Then, I was sent out on a Cara Connects’ temporary assignment by the second week of April. My first assignment was a little outside my comfort zone, but my second one brought me to Catholic Charities, where I did their maintenance.
“I was responsible for making the place look nice. The center serves a lot of pregnant mothers, and it is such a busy center: they come in every day all day. I did my best to keep it as clean as I could to keep everything running efficiently.
“The most rewarding part of the job was the people. The staff and the clients made me feel confident and appreciated, and they complimented my work often. I was on the job for about four months since it was only a temporary role; but not matter what I do next, I’m going to bring my same work ethic and drive.
“Getting a permanent job would have a huge impact on my life. I come from a rough neighborhood, and I have a background. So, having a place to work every day would be a blessing. It would keep me focused and out of trouble.
“But a lot of employers interview me and then say they’ve moved on in the hiring process, or they’ve found other candidates. I believe it has a lot to do with my background, and I wish employers knew that my background doesn’t define me. That it’s not who I am. I’m not saying that it was a good thing, but I’ve been out of jail for almost seven years.
“I’m just looking for somebody to give me a chance to help them grow their company. I need a chance where someone believes in me – because I believe in myself.”
