Meet London
He’s transforming his life at Cara, thanks to your support.
What was your life like before Cara?
I was in trouble. I went to prison for a little bit and it really got me thinking about what I was doing in life and what I was going to do once I got out of here.
How would you describe yourself then?
Confused, despaired…a mess.
What was your turning point?
It was impossible to get a job out of prison and I knew I needed one so I wouldn’t continue moving backwards. I kept thinking what was I going to do when I am 70 years old? I knew I wanted a 401k and doing this was going to get me there.
Do you remember your first impression of Cara?
I just remember I was expected to sing in front of a bunch of random people. I didn’t know how to feel about that but then I realized it got me out of my comfort zone. I wanted to be able to live outside the box and not be relaxed in my life anymore. Being uncomfortable is a really good thing because it pushes you to do something different..and that made me stay and continue on.
What surprised you about Cara?
The thing that surprised me most is the support everyone gives you here. Today was a low day for me because I was stressed about my bank account and I’m still trying to find a job. But when I got to Cara this morning, everyone instantly saw me not feeling myself and asked me what was wrong. With that, I know I am never alone here.
What was it like the first day you put on a suit to come to Cara?
At first I hated it. A suit to me was only worn at church and funerals. But now when I look in the mirror, I look professional like I’m here for a reason. Now when I am in the city, I see men dressed like me who are also dressed for success. You have to feel like success in order to get it.
If you could go back to your first day of Cara and give yourself any piece of advice, what would it be?
“You should’ve come here a long time ago.”
What’s your go-to song for the Motivations circle?
“Never Would Have Made It” by Marvin Sapp. Basically it says I could have lost my life but that there’s hope now because of the people here who save you.
Describe yourself now.
Hopeful, joyful, inspired.
What’s your dream job?
I’d like to be a motivational speaker like Mr. Jesse. That ability to connect with people is something I would love to do daily. It makes you realize you aren’t alone and people need to hear other people’s stories in order to realize that. And I think that’s so rewarding.
Where would you be without Cara?
Either back in prison or a mental hospital…anywhere terrible to be honest.
What motivates you?
It means having to work for it. It means surrounding yourself with people who inspire you. And it means having to work so hard to get to your destination.
